If you’ve ever wondered whether you can use a gift card to pay for your next cab or rideshare, you’re not alone. The answer depends on the service you’re using—and how you plan to pay. Here’s what to know about which taxi and ride-hailing platforms accept gift cards, how to use them correctly, and where tools like Fluz fit into the picture.
Uber: Yes, Gift Cards Work Seamlessly
Uber accepts gift cards as a direct form of payment within the app. You can enter the code into your Uber Wallet and use the balance for both rides and Uber Eats orders. You can even buy Uber gift cards for the exact fare amount through Fluz, allowing you to earn cashback instantly.
To redeem a gift card:
- Open the Uber app and go to Account > Wallet.
- Tap + Add Payment Method > Gift Card.
- Enter the code and the balance will be applied.
More details available via Uber’s gift card FAQ.
Lyft: Gift Cards Are Accepted, With Some Conditions
Lyft also allows gift cards, but only through the app. You must add the code to your Lyft account first—the card cannot be swiped at the time of payment. Lyft gift cards are available through retailers and online platforms.
To use a gift card with Lyft:
- Open the app, go to Menu > Payment > Add Lyft Gift Card.
- Enter your code and the balance applies to future rides.

Curb: Gift Cards Not Currently Supported
Unlike Uber and Lyft, Curb does not currently support gift cards. Curb focuses on connecting users with licensed taxis, and payments are typically made via credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. There is no built-in gift card option in the app at this time.
What About Virtual Cards Like Fluz?
If a service doesn’t accept gift cards, you still have options. With Fluz, you can pay using a virtual debit card linked to Apple Pay or Google Pay. This is especially helpful for services that accept contactless or wallet-based payments but not direct gift cards—like Curb or traditional taxis.
Best Practices for Using Gift Cards in Cabs or Ride Apps
- Always check if the gift card must be added before the ride starts.
- Keep the app updated; newer versions often expand payment options.
- When in doubt, use Apple Pay, PayPal, or a Fluz virtual card to cover your fare and earn rewards.
